Dan is the creator of the legendary Heronswood Nursery and, more recently, Windcliff, his own garden on a bluff overlooking Puget Sound. His life’s work centers on sustainable horticultural practice, distinctive garden design, and expanding our collective awareness of the diversity — and wonder — of plant life on Earth.

Dan will take us through the story of both gardens — from the shade of Heronswood to the sun-drenched slopes of Windcliff — sharing the plant discoveries, design choices, and lessons learned along the way.

He is the author of Windcliff: A Story of People, Plants, and Gardens, a memoir and gardening book chronicling the creation of his iconic Puget Sound garden — blending personal stories, plant-hunting anecdotes, and design principles with stunning photography by Claire Takacs. It has been celebrated as an inspiring, visually rich guide for gardeners, offering insight into Hinkley’s philosophy of building an extraordinary landscape, from plant selection to the integration of house and garden.
